Doctoral Studies

International postgraduates are welcome to do their doctoral studies at TalTech.
TalTech is recognized as a research university, providing research-based education at all cycles in the areas of natural and exact sciences, engineering, manufacturing and technology, social sciences and in related areas. The PhD students benefit from studying at TalTech as the leading engineering R&D institution in Estonia.

A doctoral programme corresponds to 4 years studies and requires in total 240 ECTS.

The PhD programme consists of:

  • an independent scientific project (75% of doctoral studies)
  • course work corresponding to 60 ECTS
  • teaching activities, including supervision of bachelor's and master's theses
  • an external research mobility
  • a PhD thesis
  • a public defense

The doctor´s degree awarded at TalTech is called Doctor of Philosophy, in brackets followed by a name of the narrower curricular specialization. 

The graduated PhD student:

  • has an in-depth scientific and systematic overview of his/her research field
  • has deep scientific knowledge about theoretical bases and research methods in his/her field
  • has skills to formulate, analyse and solve scientific problems
  • can independently choose appropriate research methods and technologies to solve specific scientific problems and critically assess the quality of solutions
  • be able to publish the original research results in peer-reviewed high-quality international journals and proceedings
  • has an overview of social and ethical aspects related to his/her research field
  • can analyze the research results in his/her research field and clearly communicate them to general public

Tuition fee is waived for all PhD students.

According to Estonian legislation (Study Allowances and Study Loans Act), all PhD students studying with full-load have the right to receive doctoral allowance paid by the government (660€ per month) during the nominal period of studies. 

In addition, the monthly scholarship or salary is guaranteed by the supervisor or the department.

Admission to doctoral studies

Admission to doctoral studies is open throughout the year. You can apply for announced doctoral positions in several application rounds. Doctoral studies are free of charge and last for 4 years. All doctoral students are guaranteed the doctoral allowance paid by the government and full-time studies are additionally supported by the supervisor or research team.
