Estonian Intensive Language Course ESTILC
TalTech ESTILC 2019 is taking place from 08.08-27.08.2019.
NB! Only Erasmus+ exchange students* coming to Estonia may apply for the ESTILC.
The Intensive Estonian Language Courses (ESTILC) is usually held before the new semester begins and facilitates exchange students´ social, cultural, and academic integration into Estonia.
ESTILC courses can be attended regardless of the university you will spend your exchange semester/year.
As anyone who has ever been abroad for an exchange study may testify: the first weeks are the most difficult ones, being exposed to a new social, cultural, and education experience. Therefore, most of the new exchange students feel a bit awkward to understand, let alone actively use Estonian language.
By attending ESTILC, the students will learn basic Estonian vocabulary, grammar, as well as history, culture, customs and traditions of Estonia. In addition, it serves as a great opportunity to develop students´ personal competences, encourage them to make new friends, and assist them to be well prepared for upcoming academic lessons.
When facing challenges of organising study matters, arranging accommodation, or purchasing groceries in Estonia, an ESTILC alumnus will likely overcome the initial social reservation quickly and then fully enjoy every aspects of the international experience.
Newly acquired skills and techniques during the ESTILC will be an integral part of the positive Erasmus+ experiences. Those successful stories and best practices will subsequently be circulated among both home and host universities through word of mouth, social media, and university internal publications, thus more students and staff members will become aware of this programme, and actively promote these opportunities to wider audience.
Expected learning outcomes: At the end of the course, the students will have basic knowledge of the Estonian language. They will be able to introduce themselves and speak in a few sentences about their country, their family, friends, studies and interests. They will be prepared to handle various everyday situations such as shopping, using the public transportation, asking for directions, ordering food at restaurants, and visiting a doctor.
Additionally, the students will have basic knowledge about the Estonian history, culture and traditions. They will be able to locate many historically and culturally important places on the map of Estonia after having visited them. They will know some popular Estonian songs and simple steps of Estonian folk dances.
